She inherited a cottage. The cottage came with a wife.

Elise Warren came to Clitwick to sell a cottage, sign some papers, and return to the tidy, controlled life she rebuilt after her divorce. She did not come to discover she’s a witch. She definitely didn’t come to marry one.

But when the old magic protecting this hidden village begins to fail, Elise learns she’s the last descendant of Clitwick’s founder — and the only person who can renew the covenant that keeps the village alive. The catch? She has to marry the Head Witch. The marriage has to be real. And the magic has very specific, very intimate ideas about what real means.

Morgana Vex is three hundred years old, devastatingly gorgeous, and allergic to commitment. She’ll flirt with anyone, protect anyone, fight for anyone — but she hasn’t let someone stay since the last woman she loved died in her arms.

Now Morgana and Elise have until Samhain to complete a series of escalating rituals, survive a magical council that wants to shut Clitwick down, and ignore the fact that their fake marriage is becoming the most honest relationship either of them has ever had.

The cottage gave them one bed. The magic gave them a deadline. The village gave them an audience. Falling in love was not part of the contract.

Chapter One: The End of Fine

The pen they gave me was heavy. Mont Blanc, matte black, the kind of pen that says I take this seriously and also I spent four hundred dollars to prove it. I signed my name on three lines, initialed seven boxes, and ended my marriage with handwriting so steady you could have used it as a ruler.

Daniel signed after me. His pen was a Bic from his jacket pocket, and honestly, that told you everything you needed to know about the last ten years.

“All good?” our mediator asked, as though we’d just closed on a refinance rather than divided the emotional remains of a decade into two neat columns of assets and liabilities.

“All good,” Daniel said.

“All good,” I confirmed.

And that was it. Ten years of shared grocery lists and holiday cards and a bed we’d slept on opposite edges of for the last three—resolved in forty-seven minutes, including the part where the mediator’s printer jammed. Our marriage had lasted three thousand, six hundred and fifty-two days, and its dissolution had taken less time than my last dental cleaning.

Daniel and I walked out of the office together because that was the civilized thing to do, and we had always, always been civilized. He held the door. I thanked him. We stood on the sidewalk in midtown Manhattan on a Tuesday afternoon in early September, two people who had been married that morning and were not married now, and neither of us seemed to know what to do with our hands.
