Books Like Captive Prince: 12 MM Political Fantasy & Enemies-to-Lovers Reads (2026)
Books like Captive Prince are what MM fantasy readers have been asking for since C.S. Pacat finished Damen and Laurent’s story with Kings Rising in 2016. The trilogy has never really gone away: Penguin reissued Kings Rising in paperback in December 2024, and Pacat’s Dark Rise readers are still waiting on an untitled third book she has been sharing excerpts from as recently as July 2026. What people want after Captive Prince is specific and hard to find: two princes on opposite sides of a war, a power imbalance that starts out ugly, court politics sharp enough to cut, and a slow burn where trust has to be earned one betrayal at a time. This list covers Pacat’s other books, then the MM political fantasy and enemies-to-lovers romance that comes closest, with a heat rating on every pick and four Inferno-heat dark MM romances from our own shelf at the end.

What Makes Captive Prince Work
Damen is a respected warrior and the rightful heir to Akielos. When his half-brother Kastor seizes power, Damen is stripped of his name and sent to the enemy kingdom of Vere as a pleasure slave to Prince Laurent, the cold, manipulative heir of a corrupt court. If anyone learns who Damen really is, he’s dead, and the person he most needs to trust has the most reason to hate him. Then Laurent’s uncle, the Regent, makes his own move for the throne, and the two princes are forced into an alliance that runs through Prince’s Gambit and Kings Rising. Captive Prince works because nothing is free: Laurent’s ice is armor, Damen’s honor is a liability, and every concession between them is political before it’s personal. Fair warning for new readers: the first book opens with slavery and sexual violence in the Veretian court, and the romance doesn’t begin until much later.
More From C.S. Pacat
Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat
England, 1821. Will is a dock laborer on the run from the men who killed his mother, and he ends up sheltered by the Stewards, an ancient order sworn to stop the return of the Dark King. Opposite him is James St. Clair, the Stewards’ most dangerous enemy and a servant of the man hunting Will, with a past that reaches back across lifetimes. It’s YA and the romance is a slow fuse rather than a fire, but the dynamic between Will and James, enemies bound by something older than either of them, is pure Pacat. Dark Heir followed in November 2023; the third book is still untitled and undated.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
Alex Claremont-Diaz, son of the U.S. president, and Prince Henry of Britain can’t stand each other, until a fight at a royal wedding sends them both into the cake and the two governments order them to fake a friendship. The friendship becomes real, then becomes a secret relationship. Contemporary, funny and nothing like Vere, but it’s the other great “two princes from rival nations” romance, and the 2023 Prime Video film with Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine made it a phenomenon.

Warriors, Magicians and Enemies to Lovers
Sword Dance by A.J. Demas
Damiskos was a promising officer until an injury ended his career five years ago. Nobody at the villa is what they seem, and Damiskos is drawn into espionage, theft and an assassination plot. A soldier, a man everyone underestimates and an ancient-world setting: for readers who loved the Akielon half of Captive Prince. The heat is moderate and the consent is careful.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

FAQ: Books Like Captive Prince
What order do you read Captive Prince in?
Captive Prince, Prince’s Gambit, then Kings Rising (2016). It’s one continuous story, so read in order, and push through the first book: the romance and the alliance build across books two and three.
Is there a Captive Prince adaptation or a new Pacat book?
No adaptation has been announced. Pacat’s current series is Dark Rise; Dark Heir came out in November 2023, and the third book had no title or release date as of fall 2026.
How spicy is Captive Prince?
The trilogy is explicit and deals with slavery and sexual coercion, especially in the first book; Damen and Laurent’s own relationship is a long slow burn. For explicit and fully consensual, try A Strange and Stubborn Endurance or Rafe Calder’s His Rival’s Bodyguard. Our romance spice levels guide explains the chili scale used above.
What should I read first after Captive Prince?
A Taste of Gold and Iron for the prince-and-guard dynamic, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance for the political marriage, The Foxhole Court if you want the same trauma-and-loyalty slow burn in a contemporary setting. If the Foxes hook you, our books like All for the Game list keeps that thread going.
