The First Night
Vivian
Her fingertips touched my jaw and everything I’d built — the composure, the control, the forty years of performing competence like it was a personality — cracked down the center like a plate dropped on marble.
Not broke. Cracked. A hairline fracture running through the architecture of who I’d decided to be, caused by the lightest possible contact: a woman’s fingers on my jaw, tilting my face toward hers, looking at me like I was the only thing in the room that mattered.
I’d paid for this. I was aware, somewhere in the rational cortex that was rapidly losing jurisdiction over my body, that the woman standing above me was a professional. That this was a service. That the warmth in her brown eyes was either genuine or so expertly performed that the distinction was academic.
It didn’t matter. My body didn’t care about distinctions. My body cared about the fact that her thumb was tracing my lower lip and my pulse was hammering in places I’d forgotten had pulses and I was gripping the arm of a hotel chair hard enough to leave marks in the upholstery because if I let go I was going to reach for her and if I reached for her I was going to pull her down and if I pulled her down I was going to kiss her with a hunger that had nothing to do with the arrangement and everything to do with the fact that I hadn’t been touched by someone who was paying attention in so long that the attention itself felt like sex.
“Stand up,” she said. Quiet. Unhurried. Like we had all the time in the world.
I stood. My legs were steady. Nothing else was. My breathing had gone ragged, my hands were trembling at my sides, and between my legs I was already so wet that the awareness of it was making me flush — not with arousal but with something adjacent to shame, because I was a woman who controlled every variable in her life and I could not control this. I could not control the heat spreading through my chest and my stomach and my thighs. I could not control the need.
“I’m going to undress you,” she said. “And I want you to let me. Don’t help. Don’t rush. Just let me.”
The words went through me like a current. Not the content — the tone. The tone of a woman who had all the time in the world and intended to use every second of it on me. On me. Not on my portfolio. Not on my reputation. On the woman who was standing here, breathing too fast, wanting too much, unable to hide any of it.
“Can you do that?” she asked.
“Yes.” The word came out thin. Pressed through a crack in my composure that was widening by the second.
She started with the buttons. My blouse — the cream silk one I’d worn like armor all day. One button at a time. Slow. Deliberate. And with each one she let the backs of her fingers brush the skin underneath. My collarbone. The flat plane of my sternum. The soft swell between my breasts where my bra met skin that was flushed pink and too warm.
My hands kept twitching. Reaching for her, for the buttons, for control of the process. And then pulling back. I was disciplining myself into surrender, and the effort of it was making me shake.
She slid the blouse off my shoulders. It pooled on the carpet behind me — silk on wool, a whisper of sound — and I stood before her in my bra and trousers and bare feet and I was terrified and I hadn’t left. That was the part that mattered. I was terrified and I was still standing here, letting a woman I’d met two hours ago undress me one layer at a time.
She traced the line of my collarbone with one finger. Shoulder to shoulder, slow, like she was drawing me. I shivered so hard my teeth almost clicked.
“You’re sensitive here,” she said.
“I’m sensitive everywhere right now.”
“Good.”
She moved behind me. Unclasped my bra — one-handed, quick, her fingertips barely brushing my back — and slid the straps down my arms. Then she pressed her mouth to the nape of my neck, just below the twist of my hair, and kissed me there. Softly. Just once. The sound I made vibrated through her lips and I felt her smile against my skin.
She turned me to face her. I was bare from the waist up and the expression on her face nearly took me out at the knees. She was looking at me like I was worth looking at. Not appraising. Not evaluating. Seeing.
I reached for her. She let me touch her waist, her hips, the hem of her dress.
“Can I—”
“Not yet. Tonight is about you.”
“That seems unfair.”
“It’s not unfair. It’s what you’re paying for.”
The words landed and I felt them — a flicker of something that was either turned on or wounded. She was reminding me of the frame. The transaction. And the reminder made the whole thing hotter, because being purchased by this woman — being the thing she was working on, the object of her professional attention — should have felt clinical and instead felt like the most erotic thing that had ever happened to me.
She kissed me. I’d been waiting for this since the door opened. She tasted like red wine and something warm underneath it that was just her, and I kissed her back with an intensity that surprised me. Not sloppy — controlled, like everything about me — but hungry. I kissed her like I’d been rationing myself and the ration had run out. My hands came up to her face, cupping her jaw, and the reversal of it — me holding her the way she’d held me — sent heat straight down through my center and settled between my legs like a fist.
“Bed,” she said.
I went. I sat on the edge, then lay back when she pressed gently on my sternum with two fingers. I looked up at her from the white expanse of hotel sheets and she was still in her dress and I was half naked and the power dynamic — her clothed, me exposed, her standing, me lying down — was making my clit throb so hard I could feel my own pulse in it.
She unzipped my trousers and pulled them down slowly. My underwear was black, simple, and soaked. I could feel it. She could see it. Our eyes met and my jaw tightened — embarrassment and arousal braided so tight I couldn’t separate them.
She left the underwear on. Not yet.
She started at my ankles. Kissed my way up — no. Her way up. She chose the path. The inside of my calf. The tender skin behind my knee where I jerked involuntarily and grabbed a fistful of sheet. The inside of my thigh, where the skin was softer and warmer and I could feel her breath and her lips and the unbearable proximity of her mouth to where I needed it.
She took her time. She kissed every inch of skin between my knee and the edge of my underwear, alternating sides, and by the time she reached the top of my thighs I was breathing through my mouth and my hips were shifting against the mattress in small, involuntary circles that I couldn’t stop and didn’t want to.
“Mara.” My name in her voice — no. Her name. I was saying her name. Strained, low, stripped of every professional veneer I’d ever built. “Please.”
She hooked her fingers in the waistband of my underwear and pulled them down. I lifted my hips to help — breaking my own rule about not helping — and the eagerness of the gesture was so honest it made something behind her eyes soften.
I was exposed. Completely. Lying on a hotel bed with a woman I’d met two hours ago, my legs open, my body on display, and the vulnerability of it — the sheer, raw, undeniable vulnerability — was the most terrifying and most arousing thing I’d ever experienced. Because I didn’t do this. I didn’t lie down and open up and let someone see me. I managed. I controlled. I performed. And right now I was doing none of those things. I was just a woman on a bed, wet and wanting and waiting for another woman’s mouth.
She settled between my thighs and breathed against me and I arched up off the bed like I’d been electrocuted. She put one hand flat on my stomach — low, just above my pubic bone — and pressed me down gently.
“Stay,” she said. “Let me take care of you.”
“I can’t—” I swallowed. “I can’t stay still when you—”
“You can. I’ll help.”
She kept her hand on my stomach. A steady pressure. An anchor. And then she put her mouth on me.
I made a sound I didn’t recognize. A raw, chest-deep moan that came from somewhere I’d never accessed, a place below the composure and the competence and the thirty years of carefully managed emotions. She used the flat of her tongue first — broad, unhurried strokes that covered everything and focused on nothing — and my hips tried to lift against her hand and the dynamic of it — her pinning me open, working me at her pace, refusing to rush — was the thing that broke me. Not the sensation. The surrender.
She found what I liked quickly. My thighs tightened around her head when she pressed harder. My breathing stuttered when she circled my clit instead of stroking it. My hand found the back of her head — not pushing, not directing, just resting there, fingers in her dark hair, holding on because I needed something to hold.
She focused on my clit. Tight, slow circles with the tip of her tongue, steady and relentless, the same pressure, the same speed, the same maddening rhythm. I got loud. Louder than I’d been during sex in years — maybe ever. Not screaming, but these raw, low sounds that came from deep in my chest, sounds I clearly wasn’t used to making, sounds that told both of us I’d been quiet during sex for a very long time because I’d been managing my own responses the way I managed everything else and right now I couldn’t manage a goddamn thing.
“Keep your eyes open,” she said, pulling back just enough to speak. “I want you to watch.”
I looked down at her. Her dark hair between my thighs. Her brown eyes looking up at me. Her mouth wet with me. The eye contact while she went back to work was the thing that pushed me over the edge. I watched the orgasm build in my own body before I felt it — the way my stomach clenched, the way my thighs pressed against her ears, the way my breath stopped and then my whole body locked and released in a wave that I felt everywhere, my back arching off the white sheets, my hand fisting in her hair, my voice breaking on a sound that might have been her name.
She worked me through it. Gentler now, lighter, her tongue moving soft and slow while my body pulsed and my breathing came in ragged gulps. When the aftershocks faded, she pressed a kiss to the inside of my thigh — where the skin was damp and hot — and looked up at me.
I was staring at the ceiling. My chest was heaving. I felt like someone who’d been disassembled and wasn’t sure she could put herself back together.
“Good?” she asked.
I laughed. A real laugh — surprised, almost disbelieving. “That’s not the word I’d use.”
“What word would you use?”
“I don’t think I have one.”
She climbed up beside me. She was still in her dress. Still clothed. Still composed. And I was lying naked on a hotel bed, wrecked and panting, and the contrast between us — her containment and my exposure — was doing something to me that I didn’t have language for.
“I want more,” I said.
“We have time.”
She gave me a few minutes. Let me breathe. Traced patterns on my stomach with her fingertips — idle, aimless, soothing — and I watched her hand move with hypnotized attention and I thought: Nobody has touched me like this in years. Not Claire. Not anyone. Nobody has put their hands on me and wanted nothing except to make me feel good.
The thought made my eyes sting. I blinked it back.
“Turn over,” she said.
“Turn over?”
“On your stomach.”
I turned. I lay face down on the white sheets, my hair fanned across the pillow, the long line of my back exposed. I felt her straddle my thighs. Her dress rode up and I could feel the warmth of her skin against the backs of my legs. She put her hands on my shoulders and pressed, working the tension out of the muscles there, and I made a sound into the pillow that was almost a moan and almost a sob because she was finding knots I’d been carrying for years and pressing them out with her thumbs and the release was physical and emotional simultaneously.
“You carry everything here,” she said, digging her thumbs into the knots along my spine.
“I carry everything everywhere.”
She worked lower. My waist. My hips. She shifted back and kissed the base of my spine and my hips pushed into the mattress and I heard my breath quicken and I knew she could feel that I was ready again because my body was grinding against the sheets with a desperation that should have embarrassed me and didn’t.
She slid one hand underneath me, between my body and the sheets, and found me wet. Wetter than before — slick and hot and swollen — and when her fingers touched me I groaned and pressed down against her hand.
“Like this?” she asked against my spine.
“Yes. God, yes.”
She stroked me from behind, two fingers sliding through the slick heat of me while I ground against her hand. This wasn’t slow. This wasn’t the controlled, elegant approach from before. This was urgent — her fingers finding my clit and rubbing in tight, fast circles while I panted into the pillow and fucked myself against her hand with a desperation that I would probably be embarrassed about later and couldn’t possibly stop now.
She pressed two fingers inside me. I cried out — a sharp, bitten sound — and my back arched and my inner walls clenched around her immediately, tight and hot and pulsing. She curled her fingers and found the spot that made me grab the headboard with both hands.
“There,” I gasped. “There. Don’t stop.”
She didn’t stop. She fucked me with her fingers, steady and deep, curling on every stroke, her thumb pressed against my clit, her mouth on my shoulder blade. I came in under a minute. Harder than before. Louder. My whole body shaking, my voice raw, my hands white-knuckled on the headboard, my body clamping down on her fingers in rhythmic, clenching pulses that I felt from my core to my scalp.
She held me through it. Kept her fingers inside me while the aftershocks rolled through, stroking slow and gentle until I unclenched and went boneless against the sheets.
I was quiet for a long time.
She withdrew carefully, lay down beside me. I hadn’t moved. My face was turned toward her on the pillow, my eyes closed, my lips slightly parted, my hair everywhere. I felt wrecked. I felt peaceful. I felt like a woman who had just remembered what it felt like to be taken care of and was trying to figure out how to survive the memory.
“You okay?” she asked.
I nodded. Swallowed. Then: “I forgot.”
“Forgot what?”
“What it feels like. To be…” I trailed off. Every word I reached for was wrong. Touched was too simple. Loved was too much. Handled was too clinical. “I haven’t been touched like that in a long time,” I said finally. “I’d forgotten it could be like that.”
The sentence was simple and it cost me everything to say it. Because I wasn’t talking about orgasms. I could give myself those, and I did, efficiently, in the shower, with the clinical precision I brought to everything. I was talking about being touched by someone who was paying attention. Being held. Being studied and learned and responded to. The fundamental human experience of another person putting their hands on your body and meaning it.
I’d been without that for long enough that I’d forgotten it existed.
“You don’t have to forget again,” she said, and it came out soft and real and dangerously close to a promise.
I looked at her. This woman. This stranger who was not a stranger anymore. Who’d put her mouth on me and her fingers inside me and her hand on my stomach to hold me still and who was now looking at me with brown eyes that were warm and steady and not performing anything.
“Thank you,” I said.
“You can thank me. It’s fine.”
“It feels strange.”
“Most of this feels strange at first.”
I smiled. Small, tired, genuine. The first real smile I’d given anyone in months. It changed my whole face — I could feel it happening, the softening, the warming, the release of muscles I didn’t know I’d been clenching.
She got dressed. I watched her from the bed, the sheet pulled to my waist. She moved through the room collecting herself — clutch, shoes, a check in the bathroom mirror — and every step she took toward the door felt like a subtraction. Like the room was getting dimmer.
“Mara.”
She turned.
“Can I request you specifically next time?”
Next time. Not if there’s a next time. A certainty. I was already certain. Standing in the wreckage of my own composure, still tasting her name in my mouth, I was certain I was going to see this woman again.
“You can request me through the app. Just use my name.”
“And you’ll come?”
The question had more weight than the words could carry. And will you be here again, in this room, with me. And will you do what you did tonight. And will it feel like this again.
“I’ll come,” she said.
She left. The door clicked shut. The room was quiet.
I lay in the enormous hotel bed in Room 1412, naked, alone, staring at the ceiling, and I pressed my fingers against my thighs — my grounding gesture, the one I’d done a thousand times before — and this time the pressing felt different. This time I wasn’t holding myself together. I was holding the feeling in. Sealing it inside my body before it could escape.
Her fingers on my jaw. Her mouth on my skin. Her voice saying stay and let me and you don’t have to forget again.
I picked up my phone. I opened the Meridian app. My fingers were shaking.
I booked her for Sunday.
Four days. I told myself I could wait four days.
I couldn’t even wait four hours to decide.
