Chapter One: The Apartment Beneath the Party
The boxes have labels.
Not my labels. Graham’s assistant printed them on a label maker and pressed them onto each cardboard flap in her precise, apologetic handwriting. Kitchen — fragile. Bedroom — linens. Office — miscellaneous. As though my entire life can be sorted into categories that make sense to a twenty-six-year-old who once asked me if I needed help finding a “transitional living space.”
I told her an apartment would be fine.
She found me this one. Fourth floor of the Marlowe Building, a converted 1920s department store in the arts district, with original brass elevators and dark parquet floors and tall windows that let in more light than I know what to do with. It’s beautiful. It’s also not mine. Nothing in it is mine except the boxes, and even those were packed by someone else.
I set a vase on the kitchen counter. White ceramic. Wedding gift. I don’t remember who gave it to us, which says everything about the kind of gifts we received — tasteful, interchangeable, chosen from a registry I spent three weekends assembling because Graham said he trusted my eye.
Graham trusted my eye the way he trusted my cooking and my guest lists and my ability to smooth every jagged edge his career produced. He trusted me to be easy. And I was. For eighteen years, I was the easiest woman in every room, and the reward for all that effortless accommodation was discovering that he’d been sleeping with a tax attorney named Diane for the better part of a year.
I put the vase in a cabinet and close the door.
The apartment has good bones. High ceilings, crown molding, a deep bathtub I haven’t used yet, a bedroom large enough for the queen bed I ordered because I refused to bring the California king. The king was ours. The queen is mine, and I lie in the center of it with my arms out like a starfish just because I can.
