They were each other’s first real home. Then one woman chose the family fortune over their future.

Mara Ellis is very good at endings. She’s the divorce attorney other attorneys warn their clients about — ruthless in court, untouchable in negotiations, and completely unwilling to let anyone close enough to leave a mark. Not again.

Then Delilah Hart walks back into her office.

Delilah is Mara’s first love, her worst heartbreak, and the embattled heir to a crumbling family vineyard. She needs Mara to protect her inheritance from the relatives determined to force a sale. She also needs temporary custody of Beau — the rescue dog they adopted together before their breakup.

Mara takes the case for professional reasons only. At least, that’s what she tells herself. Because as harvest season turns old wounds into new temptation, Mara must decide whether Delilah is still the woman who ruined her life — or the one mistake she would make all over again.

Chapter One: The Closer

The first rule of family law is that nobody walks into a courtroom believing they are the villain.

Dennis Holt certainly didn’t. He sat at the opposing counsel’s table in a twelve-thousand-dollar suit with his hands folded like a man at prayer, performing the role of wounded patriarch for the judge, the gallery, and anyone stupid enough to believe that a man who had hidden three offshore accounts from his wife of twenty-two years was capable of genuine contrition.

I let him perform. I even let his attorney, a florid man named Gregson who sweated through every cross-examination like it was a cardio class, build his case for forty-five minutes. Joint custody. Shared assets. A family man who simply wanted what was fair.

Fair. That word did a lot of heavy lifting in family court.

When it was my turn, I stood slowly. Buttoned my jacket — sapphire today, sharp lapels, because presentation is just argument your opponent can’t object to. I could feel the room recalibrate. Gregson’s client stopped performing long enough to look nervous, which was the first honest expression he’d worn all morning.

“Mr. Holt,” I said, and I let his name sit in the air for a beat. Just long enough to feel uncomfortable. “You’ve testified that you’ve been a dedicated, present father to your three children. Is that correct?”

“That’s right.” He adjusted his tie. A tell.

“And you’ve stated under oath that you disclosed all financial assets to your wife during the mediation process.”

“I did.”

“I see.” I picked up a document from my table. Held it without looking at it, because I’d memorized every line three days ago. “Can you explain, then, why Cayman National Bank has records of an account opened in your name fourteen months ago with a deposit of one point two million dollars — an account that does not appear anywhere in your financial disclosure?”

Gregson was on his feet. “Objection —”

“I have the certified bank records, Your Honor. Entered as Exhibit 14-C.”

The judge waved Gregson down. Dennis Holt’s face went through a fascinating series of adjustments — surprise, then calculation, then the particular species of indignation that guilty men deploy when they’ve been caught and have decided their best option is to be offended about it.

I didn’t wait for his answer. I never do when I already know it will be a lie…
