The kick drum was two decibels too hot and nobody cared but me.
I stood behind the monitor board at the side of stage three—the smallest stage at the Catskill Sound Festival, the one they gave to bands whose names you’d recognize only if you spent too much time on Bandcamp—and listened to Vicious Habit’s drummer overpower every other instrument in the mix.
I was turning to leave when I heard it.
Not the words—not yet. The frequency. A voice resonating at a specific harmonic that I recognized the way most people recognize a face. Low, warm, with a grain of smoke in the upper register and a vibrato that sat naturally at about six hertz—just fast enough to feel alive, just slow enough to feel controlled.
