Two sprinters. One bed. .02 seconds between rivals and lovers.

Sloane Mitchell is the second-fastest woman in America, and she’s coming for the crown. Raised broke, fueled by fury, she runs like every race is a shut-off notice — and she’s two hundredths of a second from taking everything Harper Chen has.

Harper Chen is the golden girl — sponsor-polished, media-trained, four-time national champion. But behind the billboard is a woman living in a closet built by contracts and careful parents, and the lock is a seven-figure morality clause that says her “lifestyle choices” are a terminable offense.

When their coach forces them to room together at Olympic training camp — one queen bed, eight weeks, no escape — the rivalry that’s owned American sprinting combusts into something neither of them planned. Rules are written. Rules are broken. A pact is made: no kissing, no feelings, no staying after. The pact lasts about as long as the tape line down the middle of the mattress.

But when the closet door gets kicked open by a tabloid leak and a corporate ultimatum, Harper has to choose: the architecture of the careful life she’s built — or the woman who makes her want to tear it all down.

Chapter One: Photo Finish

Two hundred meters is an honest distance.

The 100 is a drag race — whoever twitches best, wins. The 400 is a science experiment about how much lactic acid a human body can hold before it files for divorce. But the 200? The 200 tells the truth. You come off the curve with whatever you’ve built, whatever you’ve earned, whatever you are, and the last eighty meters strip you down to it in front of everyone.

I love the 200 because it doesn’t lie.

Which is why I hate Harper Chen. Because the 200 keeps telling me she’s better than I am, and I refuse to believe the one honest thing in my life.

Lane five, national championship final, ninety-one degrees on the track and the crowd noise coming in waves like weather. I rolled my neck and shook out my hands and did not look two lanes over, because I knew exactly what I’d see. Harper in lane seven, serene as a church, going through her setup like the eighty thousand people in the stadium were a light drizzle she’d dressed for.

The gun cracked and I was gone.

We leaned together. I want to be very clear about what .02 seconds is. It is not time. You cannot experience it. It’s a rounding error, a shrug, the length of a blink’s opening act. No human being on earth can perceive two hundredths of a second. The scoreboard can, though.

She jogged back down the straight, high-fived a kid at the rail, and then she crossed the track toward me with her hand out. “Good race,” Harper said. “And yet,” Harper said pleasantly, “I didn’t need to.” She squeezed my hand once — I felt that squeeze in my molars — and walked off to do her victory lap.

Coach Rivera called at seven the next morning. “Mitchell. You’re in. Van leaves from the federation office Monday, six a.m.”

“Housing at the center is tight this cycle. Renovation flooded the east dorm. Everybody’s doubling up.”

“Fine. Whatever. Who am I with?”

“Room 214. You and Chen. Eight weeks.”

Eight weeks. One room. Harper Chen brushing her teeth six feet from me. For the purposes of beating her, obviously. Know your enemy. Very tactical. Very normal.

Fine, Chen. Bring your ice. I’ve been melting things my whole life.

Gold Standard — A scene TOO HOT for Amazon

The Olympic Village. The night after the 200m final. Gold and silver medals still on. The whole world knows their names now — and inside their room, Sloane and Harper celebrate the way rivals-turned-lovers do: loudly, slowly, with the medals cold against bare skin and the words “I love you” still new enough to taste like victory.
