I thought she was my roommate. Then she got a girlfriend.
Thirty-one-year-old Piper Hall has lived with Hannah Cole for six years. Hannah knows how Piper takes her coffee, what she looks like when she’s lying about being fine, and exactly how to talk her down from a panic spiral. Piper knows Hannah will always be there.
That’s the problem.
When Hannah starts dating a gorgeous woman from her gym, Piper discovers that six years of casual flirting, borrowed clothes, and sleeping in each other’s beds after bad breakups wasn’t friendship. It was foreplay she’d been too chickenshit to act on.
She kisses Hannah the night a date goes wrong. Hannah kisses back — then tells Piper she doesn’t get to want her only when someone else does.
Hannah gives Piper one chance: prove she wants her when nobody’s competing, nobody’s watching, and “roommate” isn’t the safety net she hides behind.

Chapter One: Date Night
I knew something was wrong when Hannah put on the black top.
Not the casual black top — the one she threw on for grocery runs and Sunday laundry, the one with the bleach stain near the hem that she pretended was “character.” No. This was the other black top. The one that cost more than our electric bill.
Hannah Cole did not wear that top for nothing.
I was on the couch in her old NYU T-shirt — mine now, by the unwritten law of six years of cohabitation — eating dry Cheerios out of a novelty mug shaped like a clapperboard that I’d stolen from a set in Williamsburg.
Hannah walked out of her bedroom, and my hand stopped halfway to my mouth.
She’d done her hair. Not just washed-and-air-dried, which was already devastating enough. No, she’d actually styled it. Soft, loose, tucked behind one ear so you could see the line of her jaw and the small silver hoop she only wore when she wanted to feel polished.
“You look nice,” I said, which was the understatement of my entire adult life.
“Where are you going?”
“Dinner.”
“With who?”
She picked up her keys from the bowl by the door. “A woman from my gym. Maya.”
“It’s a date, Piper.”
