She needs a fiancée to save the house. Her rival needs a place to sleep. Neither woman planned to share a bed — or to keep wanting to.
When ruthlessly organized estate attorney Mireille “Miri” Sloane learns that her late aunt left her a historic Hudson Valley house — but only if she establishes a shared household within sixty days — she does the sensible thing. She asks the woman who hates her most to fake an engagement.
Pippa Quill is a bright, chaotic relocation specialist who makes a living helping strangers move into the lives they actually want. She’s also Miri’s longtime professional rival, her late aunt’s favorite volunteer, and the only person desperate enough for housing after her apartment floods to agree to share a bed with a woman who once torpedoed her biggest contract.
The deal is simple: Pippa gets a roof. Miri gets a ring, a house, and sixty days to save the community legal clinic her aunt loved. No feelings. No real kissing. Absolutely no falling asleep wrapped around the woman who was supposed to be a paperwork solution.
But the town believes they’re engaged. Miri’s mother wants a wedding plan. Pippa’s ex wants her back. A plumbing disaster leaves one functional bedroom. And every night in that shared bed makes “practice affection” harder to separate from the real thing.
By the time their fake fiancée act gets too convincing, the question isn’t whether they can fool everyone else. It’s whether either woman can survive admitting she wants the other to stay after the moving truck leaves.

Chapter One: Estate of Emergency
I had a system for grief.
Most people didn’t, which was why they ended up sobbing in my office at eleven a.m. on a Tuesday, surrounded by documents they hadn’t read and decisions they weren’t prepared to make. They came to me red-eyed and rudderless, clutching death certificates like lifelines, and I guided them through probate with the calm, efficient compassion of a woman who understood that love was a feeling but an estate was a legal structure, and only one of those could be managed.
Six weeks after Aunt Elodie died, I sat in Gideon Bristow’s conference room in my sharpest charcoal suit with every document organized, every question prepared, and my grief filed in the locked drawer where I kept things that couldn’t be billed.
“Mireille.” Gideon folded his hands on the mahogany table between us. He had the particular gravity of a man who’d been senior partner at Sloane, Bristow & Klein for two decades and believed the firm’s name entitled him to paternal authority over everyone who shared it. “Before we begin, I want you to know that Elodie’s wishes were… characteristically unconventional.”
“She once left her dry cleaner a Tiffany lamp and a note that said ‘for making my blouses feel important,’” I said. “I’m familiar with her conventions.”
Gideon didn’t smile. That was the first warning.
He opened the estate file — a leather folio I recognized as Elodie’s, monogrammed EMS in faded gold — and began reading.
The broad strokes were expected. Elodie’s financial accounts would fund the charitable trust she’d established in 2019. Her art collection went to the Hudson Valley Arts Council. Her books — all four thousand of them — were bequeathed to the Beacon Hollow Public Library, with the stipulation that they maintain a dedicated queer-literature section and “stop shelving Audre Lorde under general poetry as if she were a woman without context.”
I almost smiled. Almost.
“The house,” Gideon said, and something in his tone made my spine straighten.
Elodie House — the three-story 1890s Victorian on the river, with its wraparound porch and stained-glass transoms and gardens gone gloriously feral — was mine. I’d expected that. I’d spent half my childhood in that house, reading in the library while Elodie argued housing-rights cases at the kitchen table, falling asleep to the sound of the river through windows she never closed, even in winter.
“Subject to conditions,” Gideon added.
I waited.
“The property transfers to you in full only upon demonstration that a shared household or community co-stewardship structure has been established within sixty days of the estate reading. If the condition is unmet, the property will be sold at market value and the proceeds directed to the Elodie M. Sloane Community Trust, administered independently.”
The words landed with the precision of a contract clause designed to detonate.
“Sixty days,” I repeated.
“From today.”
