Chapter One: Rowan
The file landed on Rowan’s desk at 7:14 AM, which meant Zara had been awake since at least five.
Rowan knew this because Zara Okafor did not assemble threat packages casually. Each one was a small architecture of obsession made legible — photographs arranged chronologically, letters transcribed and annotated, incident reports cross-referenced with public records and social media scrapes. The folder waiting beside Rowan’s coffee was thick enough to suggest six months of escalation, and the red tab on the spine meant Zara had already classified the threat level as credible.
Rowan didn’t open it immediately. She took a sip of coffee — black, no sugar, brewed in the small kitchen of Aegis Blackwell’s Midtown offices before anyone else arrived — and studied the label on the cover.

Camille Laurent had been famous since her mid-twenties, when a low-budget indie about a woman dismantling her marriage frame by frame had turned her into the kind of actress critics called “incandescent” and audiences called “the one who makes you cry on airplanes.” She’d since built a career on roles that required her to be emotionally naked while remaining physically untouchable — the sort of performances that made people feel they understood her, even though every interview Rowan had ever skimmed suggested no one did.

The first photograph was a bouquet. White peonies, tightly arranged, wrapped in tissue paper that had been hand-stamped with a repeating floral pattern. Pretty, if you didn’t look closely. When you did, you noticed the charm nestled among the stems — a small gold key on a delicate chain, identical to the one Camille Laurent wore at her throat in nearly every public photograph Rowan had seen.
The bouquet had been left inside the service entrance of Laurent’s Tribeca townhouse. Not on the doorstep. Not with a doorman. Inside the locked service corridor, past the keypad entry, placed on the concrete floor with the care of someone who wanted it found but not intercepted.
That was the part that tightened the muscles across Rowan’s shoulders.
