TJ Klune Books in Order: Cerulean Chronicles, Green Creek & Every Standalone (2026)
TJ Klune books in order is two lists in one. There’s the Klune most readers know, the author of The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door, whose cozy queer fantasy tops bestseller lists. And there’s the Klune who wrote dozens of MM romances before that, from Bear, Otter and the Kid to the Green Creek werewolves. 2026 adds to both: We Burned So Bright, an end-of-the-world road trip with a married couple of forty years, a new edition of Murmuration on November 17 and The Stars Look Like Home, narrated by a dog, on January 12, 2027. Below is every TJ Klune series in reading order with a spoiler-free hook, where to start, the full publication list, screen news and hotter MM picks for when you’ve read them all.

TJ Klune Books in Order: Where to Start
Start with The House in the Cerulean Sea. It’s his bestseller, a 2021 Alex Award winner, the start of the Cerulean Chronicles and the warmest possible introduction to how he writes: a lonely man, a strange household, a found family and a slow, gentle love story. If you want romance first and heat on the page, start with Wolfsong, the first Green Creek book, instead. If you want the newest, We Burned So Bright stands alone.
One thing to know going in: his big fantasy novels are love stories with the door mostly closed, while his earlier romance backlist and Green Creek are open door. Same author, very different reads.
The Cerulean Chronicles in Order
- The House in the Cerulean Sea (2020): Linus Baker, a by-the-book caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, is sent to an island orphanage to decide whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Their guardian, Arthur Parnassus, would do anything to keep them safe, and his secrets come out along the way. A New York Times bestseller and the book that made Klune a household name.
- Somewhere Beyond the Sea (2024): Arthur has built a good life on the island where he had a painful childhood, and hopes to adopt the children with Linus. Then he’s summoned to speak publicly about his past, a new child who calls himself “monster” arrives, and the family is pushed to a breaking point. Darker, angrier and about the work it takes to keep the life you want.
A third book hasn’t been officially announced. Our best queer found-family romance books list is where to go while you wait.
Green Creek in Order
Klune’s werewolf series, with Alpha, Beta and Omega pack dynamics and his most intense romance writing.
- Wolfsong (2016): Ox grew up believing his father, who told him he’d never be worth anything and then left. At sixteen he meets the boy who moves into the house at the end of the lane, a kid who talks constantly after nearly two years of silence. At seventeen he learns the family’s secret. At twenty-three a murder sends the boy after the killer and leaves Ox behind, and three years later the boy comes back a man.
- Ravensong (2018)
- Heartsong (2019)
- Brothersong (2020)
Read the four in order: the overarching plot runs straight through them. Short companion stories, Lovesong (2018), Feralsong (2020) and Lovesong Part II (2020), fill in the gaps for completists.
The Standalone Fantasy Novels in Order
- Under the Whispering Door (2021): Wallace Price is collected from his own funeral by a reaper and taken not to the afterlife but to a village tea shop run by Hugo, the ferryman who helps souls cross over. Wallace isn’t ready, so with Hugo’s help he starts living the life he skipped, until a being called the Manager gives him one week. Grief, hope and a ghost falling in love.
- In the Lives of Puppets (2023): Vic Lawson, the only human in a family of robots, lives hidden in a treehouse home with Gio, the inventor android who raised him, a sadistic nurse machine and a vacuum desperate for love. When Vic repairs a strange android called Hap, Gio’s past catches up, Gio is taken to the City of Electric Dreams, and the family sets out to bring him home. Pinocchio, by way of Swiss Family Robinson and Wall-E.
- We Burned So Bright (2026): a wandering black hole is headed for Earth and everyone has about a month left. Don and Rodney, husbands of forty years, drive from Maine to Washington State to finish some unfinished business, meeting people who refuse to accept the end and people ready to meet it. His own site calls it heart-wrenching.
The Extraordinaries in Order (YA)
- The Extraordinaries (2020): Nick Bell, a fanfic writer with ADHD and the most popular author in the superhero fandom, has a run-in with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero, and decides to become extraordinary himself, with or without his best friend Seth Gray, who may be the love of his life.
- Flash Fire (2021)
- Heat Wave (2022)
Tales From Verania in Order
- The Lightning-Struck Heart (2015): Sam Haversford, a lonely kid from the slums of the City of Lockes, accidentally turns a gang of bullies to stone and ends up apprenticed to Morgan of Shadows, the king’s wizard. At fifteen he falls for Ryan Foxheart, a new knight who is very much taken. Then a dragon kidnaps the prince. A slapstick fantasy rom-com with a hornless unicorn named Gary.
- The Tragic Life of Lady Tina DeSilva (2015, short)
- A Destiny of Dragons (2017)
- The Consumption of Magic (2017)
- A Wish Upon the Stars (2018)
- Fairytales From Verania (2021)
- The Damning Stone (2022)
The Romance Backlist: Seafare, At First Sight and How to Be
- Seafare: Bear, Otter and the Kid (2011), Who We Are (2012), The Art of Breathing (2014), The Long and Winding Road (2017). Bear McKenna has spent three years raising his six-year-old brother Tyson, the Kid, since their mother left, and has put his own life on hold. Then Otter, his best friend’s older brother, comes home. Klune’s debut and still a reader favorite.
- At First Sight: Tell Me It’s Real (2013), The Queen & the Homo Jock King (2016), Until You (2017), Why We Fight (2019). His broadest rom-coms.
- How to Be: How to Be a Normal Person (2015), How to Be a Movie Star (2019). Gus Tiberius runs a video rental store nobody visits in Abby, Oregon, keeps a ferret named Harry S. Truman and wants to be left alone, until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster at the coffee shop, takes an interest and Gus decides to become as normal as possible for him.
- The Immemorial Year: Withered + Sere (2016), Crisped + Sere (2016). Post-apocalyptic, with madmen, robots and cannibals.
Klune’s other standalones are Burn (2012), Into This River I Drown (2013), John & Jackie (2014), Murmuration (2016), Olive Juice (2017) and The Bones Beneath My Skin (2018). Murmuration is set in Amorea, a seemingly perfect town in 1954 with no children, no parents and nobody who comes back from the mountains, where a bookseller named Mike falls for Sean, a waiter at the diner, while a flock of uncanny starlings gathers. A new edition is due November 17, 2026.

Bring tissues.
On screen, The House in the Cerulean Sea was optioned by Apple TV for a series, but no casting, production or release news has followed, and none of Klune’s other books has an active adaptation announced. No third Cerulean Chronicles book has been officially confirmed either.
