The penthouse smelled like money that had stopped trying.
Not the aggressive cologne-and-leather money of a hedge fund partner’s bachelor pad, or the anxious floral-arrangement money of a couple staging their divorce settlement. This was old money holding its breath. Bespoke humidity control and Italian marble and the faint mineral tang of a wine refrigerator running at cellar temperature behind a wall no one had opened in months.
Avery Beck stood barefoot on that marble — shoes off, measuring tape looped around her neck like a stethoscope — and pressed her toes into the floor until she could feel the radiant heating through her soles.
