She was her professor. Then she was her everything.
Dr. Elise Rowan has spent fifteen years building an impeccable reputation as the professor who never crosses a line. Then Harper Quinn sits in her front row — a twenty-two-year-old honors student writing a thesis on forbidden desire who makes Elise question every boundary she’s ever drawn.
Harper has always been drawn to competent, commanding older women. But she’s never acted on it — not while Elise controls her academic future. When Harper files a formal supervisor change to remove the power imbalance, the only barrier left is the one they’ve been pretending they want.
The first kiss happens in Elise’s office. What follows is a secret affair built on praise and power play, intellectual foreplay and locked doors, a forty-year-old woman discovering desire she spent decades denying and a twenty-two-year-old discovering she was never, ever straight.
But the campus is small, the gossip is faster, and the line between “former student” and “scandal” is thinner than either of them wants to admit.

Chapter One
The problem with sitting in the front row of Dr. Rowan’s class was that there was nowhere to hide.
Harper Quinn had claimed the same seat every Tuesday and Thursday since September — second from the left, close enough to read the marginalia Rowan scrawled on the whiteboard, far enough from center that she could pretend she wasn’t staring. It was a strategic position. A defensible one. The kind of seat a serious honors student would choose for academic reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with the way Dr. Elise Rowan’s voice sounded when she said the word transgression.
Which she was saying right now. Repeatedly. While pacing the front of the lecture hall in a charcoal blazer and black trousers, her dark auburn hair catching the overhead light every time she turned.
“Transgression in fiction is never accidental,” Rowan said, and Harper’s pen froze mid-note. “A character doesn’t stumble into forbidden desire. The author constructs the architecture of the taboo first — the walls, the rules, the consequences — so that when the protagonist reaches for what she wants, the reader feels every brick she’s pulling down.”
She. Not “they.” Not “the protagonist.” She. Harper’s brain filed that pronoun away in the same overheated drawer where she kept every other scrap of evidence that Dr. Rowan might not be as rigidly heterosexual as her faculty bio implied.
Divorced. No ring. No photos of anyone on her desk except a black-and-white shot of Joan Didion that was either a professional statement or a very specific type of lesbian energy. Harper hadn’t decided which.
“The question I want you to sit with—” Rowan paused, one hand braced on the podium, the other gesturing with a paperback she’d been quoting from. “—is whether the reader is a witness to the transgression or a participant. When you’re reading a scene where a woman reaches for something she’s been told she can’t have, are you watching her? Or are you reaching with her?”
The lecture hall was quiet. Sixty-odd students holding their breath, the way they always did when Rowan asked a question that felt less like an exam prompt and more like a dare.
Harper’s hand went up before her brain approved the motion.
Rowan’s gaze swept the room and landed on her. Gray-green eyes, sharp and assessing. “Quinn.”
Harper’s mouth was dry. She was twenty-two years old, an honors student with a 3.94 GPA and a full scholarship she couldn’t afford to lose, and every time this woman said her last name she felt it in the base of her spine.
“Participant,” Harper said. Her voice came out steadier than she deserved. “The whole point of fiction is that it gives us permission to want what we can’t have in reality. The reader isn’t watching the transgression — she’s rehearsing it. If the prose is good enough, the boundary between the character’s desire and the reader’s dissolves completely. That’s not a flaw in the reading experience. That’s the point.”
Silence. Two heartbeats of it. Then the corner of Rowan’s mouth curved — not a full smile, never a full smile, just that devastating micro-expression that made Harper’s ribcage feel too small.
“Excellent, Ms. Quinn.”
Two words. Thirteen letters. Harper had been chasing that exact combination all semester, and it still hit her like a defibrillator.
