The bodyguard’s restraint is far more dangerous than any threat.

Aria Monroe has spent twenty years controlling the story. She can charm interviewers, redirect scandals, and make millions of strangers believe they know her. But when threatening letters begin quoting private conversations, the studio decides she needs protection she can’t dismiss.

Celeste Ward is not the bodyguard Aria expects. Six feet tall. Silver-templed. Elegant enough to cross any red carpet without attracting suspicion. She can conceal a weapon beneath an evening gown, identify a threat before anyone else notices, and resist every attempt Aria makes to break her composure.

Until a premiere attack forces them into a safe house with one bedroom, no staff, and nowhere for the attraction to hide.

Their first kiss is adrenaline. Their first night comes with professional rules. Soon the woman assigned to protect Aria’s body is the only person trusted with everything beneath the public image.

But the threat isn’t coming from a random fan. Someone inside Aria’s closest circle is weaponizing fear to control her career, her future, and every person she trusts.

Celeste knows loving a client compromises every boundary she has. Aria knows protection means nothing if Celeste plans to disappear the moment the danger ends.

To survive, Aria must take back control of her own story. To keep her, Celeste must accept that love isn’t proven by leaving first.

Chapter One: The Letter

The worst part about watching yourself on a seventy-inch screen at eleven o’clock at night was knowing exactly which take the editor had chosen and exactly why they were wrong.

“That’s the C take,” I said to no one, because I was alone in my living room with a glass of pinot noir and the kind of exhaustion that made a person talk to a television. “The A take had better pacing. The silence landed harder.”

On screen, I watched myself deliver a monologue about political assassination to a room full of senators who were actually a room full of extras and one very bored camera operator named Phil. My character — Elena Vasquez, fictional Secretary of State, fictional widow, fictional woman holding a government together by her fingernails — stared down the committee chairman and said something devastating about power and its cost.

I’d done it better on the first take. But the C take had a hair toss that looked good in the dailies, and editors loved a hair toss.

I paused the footage and reached for my phone. Three texts from my publicist about interview prep. Two from Naomi, my assistant, confirming tomorrow’s schedule. One from Graham with a link to a Variety piece about awards-season buzz and a string of fire emojis he was approximately fifteen years too old to be using.

The Variety piece called me “a revelation” and “long overdue for recognition.” It also described my body in the second paragraph, which was something they never did to men they considered revelatory. I screenshot it, sent it to my sister Vanessa with the caption still revolutionary in 2026: a woman has tits AND range, and went back to my wine.

It was Tuesday. My premiere was Saturday. Between now and then, I had two magazine interviews, a podcast recording, a costume fitting for the press tour, a meeting with the entertainment lawyer handling my production-company paperwork, and approximately fourteen hours of sleep available if I rationed them in ninety-minute blocks.

I was thirty-five years old, bisexual, publicly out, privately exhausted, and the frontrunner for a nomination that could redefine the next ten years of my career.

Everything was going exactly according to plan.

Which should have been my first warning.

The letter arrived at 11:47 PM, tucked inside a stack of fan mail Naomi had sorted and left on the kitchen island. I almost didn’t see it. The envelope was plain white, no return address, my name handwritten in neat block letters — indistinguishable from the hundreds of similar envelopes I received every week from fans who still believed in stationery.

I opened it while rinsing my wine glass, expecting a heartfelt note about representation or a polite request for an autographed headshot.

The letter was one paragraph. No greeting. No signature.

It quoted a conversation I’d had in my dressing room three days ago.

Word for word.

Someone had been listening. Someone close enough to hear a conversation conducted at normal volume in a room with a closed door.

I set the letter on the counter and stared at it.

The kitchen was bright. The house was locked. The security system showed green across every zone. And I was standing barefoot on cold marble reading my own private words copied in a stranger’s handwriting, and the part of my brain that had kept me alive in this industry for sixteen years was already calculating how many people had access to that dressing room.

Not many.

Not many at all.

At 3:14 AM, my phone buzzed. A notification from the security system. The front gate camera had detected motion.

A plain white envelope sat on the doormat.

Inside was a photograph. Me. In my bedroom. Through the window. I was in a towel, my back partially turned. The image was sharp. Taken from an angle that put the photographer somewhere inside the property perimeter.

The person who’d taken that photograph wasn’t outside the gate, looking in.

They were already inside.

They were already close.

And they knew exactly which window was mine.
